How to Choose the Right Toilet Seat
Replacing a toilet seat starts with getting the fit right. This guide explains how to measure your toilet, match the pan shape and choose the correct fixings, material and hinge features.
Start with the shape, three measurements and access to the fixing holes. Then explore our types of toilet seats to choose the features you prefer.
1. How to Measure for a Replacement Toilet Seat
Measure the ceramic pan rather than relying on the old seat. Record these three measurements in millimetres and compare them with the replacement seat’s dimension drawing.
Fixing Hole Spacing
Measure from the centre of one fixing hole to the centre of the other. Your measurement must fall within the seat’s stated hinge adjustment range.
Pan Length
Measure from the line through the fixing-hole centres to the front edge of the pan. Check the product drawing: overall seat length may use different measuring points.
Pan Width
Measure across the widest part of the pan. Check the seat outline and width so its support buffers rest correctly on the ceramic rim.
A “universal” toilet seat does not fit every toilet. Adjustable hinges offer flexibility, but the shape, dimensions and fixing system must also match. An unusually shaped pan may require a seat made for that particular model.

These curved shapes have different proportions. Round seats have a shorter, more circular profile, while elongated seats are longer.

D-Shaped Toilet Seats
A D-shaped seat has a relatively straight back and rounded front. Compare the profile around the front and sides with your pan.

Top Fixing
Top fixing fittings secure the seat from above. They are useful where the underside of the fixing holes is inaccessible. Check that the supplied fittings suit your pan.

Bottom fixing fittings use bolts through the pan with nuts tightened underneath. You need access below both fixing holes for installation.

4. Choose Your Hinge Features
Soft Close
Soft close hinges let the seat or lid lower gradually to reduce slamming. Let the mechanism close at its own speed and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Plastic & Thermoset
Plastic seats come in a range of designs. Thermoset, also called duroplast, has a hard, rigid finish. Compare each product’s construction and care requirements.

MDF seats are available with painted, wrapped or other decorative finishes. Moisture resistance depends on the construction and finish, so check the specification.

6. Family & Specialist Toilet Seats

7. Fitting & Caring for Your Toilet Seat
Follow the supplied instructions and use the specified fittings. Align the seat before final tightening, check that the buffers rest on the ceramic rim and avoid overtightening.
Clean according to the manufacturer’s guidance, using a soft cloth and a suitable mild cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads and dry the surface afterwards.
